The rules for using and buying MakerBuddy

These terms are an agreement between you and OR97. OR97 is the company that makes the MakerBuddy kit. MakerBuddy is its STEM education brand. In these terms, "MakerBuddy", "we" and "us" mean OR97.

You agree to these terms when you use the MakerBuddy website, resources or services. That includes reading our lessons, using the web app, joining our community, ordering a kit and accepting a quote. If you do not agree, please do not use them.

These terms apply to everyone: learners, teachers and other educators, professionals, hobbyists, partners and other visitors.

• The kit: the MakerBuddy IoT Kit V1.0. It is a board with a small Wi-Fi computer (an ESP32), plus sensors and outputs you plug in.
• The dashboards: the web app at app.makerbuddy.cc (opens in a new tab), and the free MakerBuddy browser extension for Chrome, Edge and Firefox.
• Learning: 32 free weekly lessons, project ideas and technical documentation.
• Community: our GitHub repositories, community chats and events.

The firmware, the web app and the V1.0 board design are open source (see section 9). The browser extensions are not part of the open-source files.

Features, documentation and availability may change as the project develops.

In Pakistan, you can order up to 200 kits at a time on our Buy Now page. The seller is OR97.

Prices are in Pakistani rupees (PKR), as shown when you order. Any volume discount (for 10 or more kits) is already included in the total.

   You get an order number that starts with MB-, and the total to pay.

   Pay by bank transfer

   Transfer that total to OR97's UBL bank account. The bank details appear when you order, and we email them to you. Put your order number in the payment reference.

   Send us the receipt

   Reply to the order email with a photo or screenshot of your receipt. Or send it on WhatsApp to +92 332 3336797.

   We check your payment and call you

   We confirm that your payment has arrived. Then we call you to confirm the delivery details.

   We send your kit

   We dispatch the order only after the payment has been received and confirmed.

No payment is taken on this website itself. For more than 200 kits, ask us for a quote (section 4).

Ask for a quote on the Buy Now page if your kits are going outside Pakistan. That covers the USA and Canada, the UK and Europe, the Middle East and anywhere else. In Pakistan, for more than 200 kits, email or call us for a quote.

• A quote is free. Asking for one is not an order.
• We send you a written quote. It confirms the price, shipping, delivery timeline, duties and taxes.
• Nothing is binding until you accept the written quote.
• After you accept, you pay the way the quote explains, and we send your kits.
• Need an invoice or a purchase order, or have a question about import fees? Say so in the form's notes box.

Who looks after delivery and problems depends on where you bought the kit.

When you use MakerBuddy, you agree to:

• Follow the lessons, the documentation and safe electrical practice.
• Power the board with 5 V through its micro-USB port, from a suitable USB power source. Use only parts that fit and suit the board.
• Supervise learners properly. MakerBuddy is for ages 10 and up. Younger builders need an adult nearby.
• Never change the board, or connect anything to it, in a way that could give a shock, overheat, or move and hurt someone.
• Follow the law, including the rules on privacy, security and wireless (Wi-Fi) devices.
• Never use MakerBuddy for anything illegal, harmful, deceptive or malicious.

MakerBuddy is made for learning and for trying out ideas (prototypes). It is not meant for medical, life-critical, safety-critical, industrial-control or security systems, where a failure could cause harm. Examples are medical equipment, a real fire or burglar alarm, a door lock or a factory machine.

Schools, makerspaces, universities, training programmes and other organisations may use MakerBuddy. They do so under these terms and the licences in section 9.

Each organisation stays responsible, in its own setting, for:

• supervising learners and keeping them safe (safeguarding)
• its own risk assessment
• following its own buying rules (procurement)
• following the laws and rules that apply to it (compliance)

Before your first class

This list is for your own planning. Ticking it does not change these terms, and the ticks stay in this browser only.

• We handle order, quote, message and website data as our Privacy Policy describes.
• The board works on your own Wi-Fi. Its readings and commands stay on your network, and no account is needed. MakerBuddy does not need to collect your sensor readings.
• The web app and the Chrome and Edge extension count visits with Google Analytics. The Firefox and Safari extensions do not.
• The dashboards check GitHub for new firmware versions.
• If you change the software, or connect the board to other services, your data may go elsewhere.

Some MakerBuddy files are open source. Different files use different licences.

All the open files are in the MakerBuddy-V1 repository on GitHub (opens in a new tab).

You are responsible for following each licence's conditions when you use, change or share these files. They include credit (attribution), sharing the source code, sharing alike and keeping notices.

If this summary differs from a licence file, the licence file wins.

The MakerBuddy name and logo, the website content, and anything not clearly released under an open licence are protected by intellectual-property law.

The lessons and project ideas are free to read online, with or without a kit. They are not under an open licence. To copy, change or republish them, ask us first.

If you contribute code, designs or documentation, you confirm that you have the right to contribute them. You also agree that they may be shared under the licence of the project you contributed to.

In our GitHub repositories and community channels, be respectful, helpful and on topic. Do not:

• harass anyone
• post spam
• share confidential information
• break copyright or other intellectual-property rights
• interfere with systems or networks

To the extent permitted by law, the MakerBuddy open-source project, website, software, designs and documentation are provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement or uninterrupted and error-free operation.

Open-source materials are not a promise that a self-built or modified device will meet any particular technical, safety or regulatory requirement.

Who is the seller?

For a kit ordered on our Buy Now page, or through a quote you accepted, the seller is OR97. For a kit bought from another shop, the seller is that shop.

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, MakerBuddy will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary or punitive damages; loss of data, profits, revenue, use or goodwill; or claims arising from a transaction with a third-party seller.

Nothing in these terms excludes a liability that cannot legally be excluded. Product warranties and liabilities that arise from a physical product sale rest with the seller to the extent provided by applicable law and the seller's terms.

We link to other sites and services for your convenience. Examples are GitHub, YouTube, social networks, Hackster, our WhatsApp and Discord communities, Luma events and the browser add-on stores.

We do not control those sites and services. We are not responsible for their content, availability, security, privacy practices or terms.

We may update, pause or stop parts of the website, resources or services. We may also change these terms.

The "Last updated" date at the top of this page shows when they last changed.

If you keep using MakerBuddy after a change, you accept the new terms, where the law allows.

We may limit or block access to our community or online services. We may do this for abuse, illegal activity, a security risk, or a serious (material) breach of these terms.

Rights you already have under an open-source licence stay governed by that licence.

If we disagree, we should first try to sort it out by talking in good faith. If that fails, either side may use mediation, arbitration or a court, where that is appropriate and enforceable.
